AS MYANMAR military mounted airstrikes at Karen National Union (KNU) positions in Karen province’s Hpapun district, opposite Mae Hong Son province, hitting a military hospital, one bomb landed on the Thai side triggering panic among border villagers, PPTVHD36 said today (April 20).

At 11 a.m. today Myanmar Air Force scrambled Yak-130 and Mig-29 fighter jets to hit this military hospital and nearby civilian residences dropping nine bombs at two villages, which are just 500 metres from Mae Hong Son’s Mae Som Laep subdistrict, Sop Moei district.

One bomb landed across the border in Thai territory, near the Salween river at Mae Waen village. This caused panic and chaos among Thai residents.

The 36th Ranger Regiment, stationed at the Mae Sam Laep guard post, along with the Mae Sam Laep Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, quickly evacuated Thai civilians living near the bombed site to Huai Kong Kad village in this same subdistrict for their safety.

There has been heavy fighting between the two sides with Myanmar Air Force having previously bombed communities linked to KNU’s 5th Division opposite Mae Yuam subdistrict, Mae Sariang district. As a result, several Karen civilians were injured by shrapnel and sent to Thailand for treatment at Mae Sam Laep Health Centre.
