American couple found dead at Pattaya hotel suite

AN elderly American couple were found dead locked in a tight embrace at a luxury hotel suite in Pattaya today (March 31) with what appears to be a suicide note left behind and pills scattered around the plush unit, Amarin TV said.

Pol. Lt. Col. Chinawat Thissala, an investigator at Khong Dong Tan sub-branch, was alerted of foreigners having died at this hotel on Jomtien beach and quickly went there to investigate together with rescuers from Sawang Boriboon Dhammasathan Foundation.

At the scene, room 814 on the third floor, the American man and woman, Mr. Richard Carl Speth Jr., 85, and Mrs. Kelly Marie Bennett, 65, were found dead on the floor closely embracing each other. As their bodies had started to decompose it is estimated that they had been dead for three to four days.

Several medical items and a letter written in English were found in the suite, which authorities believe may be a suicide note.

Initial investigation revealed that the couple had been staying at this hotel for approximately one month and had health problems. They had not been seen leaving their room for the past four to five days and a staff member passing by got whiffs of an unusual odour so called out to them but upon not getting a response went in and found their bodies.

Police suspect the deceased couple may have committed suicide by overdosing as medication was found near their bodies. However, forensic officers have been contacted to conduct a thorough examination, and their bodies have been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
