THAI immigration police arrested a British national on charges of hacking cash from a money transfer system and using fake credit cards to stay in dozens of luxury hotels, Naewna newspaper said today (Feb. 20).
Immigration Bureau Region 1 tracked down and arrested Mr. George (pseudonym), 50, after the Hotel Security Association alerted them about a foreigner who had stayed at several five-star hotels and used credit cards to pay but these hotels were unable to collect the payments because the legitimate cardholders abroad detected suspicious activity and blocked them.
Furthermore, it was discovered that the perpetrator attempted to use fake electronic cards to hack into security systems to access elevators and other rooms in these hotels.
An in-depth investigation showed that George is wanted by Bangkok South District Court on charges of fraud and violations of the Computer Crimes Act. He allegedly hacked the security system of a well-known online payment gateway company and transferred money into his own account in 11 transactions, totaling over 1.7 million baht.
He had been evading arrest for over two years, using forged passports and employing different Thai women to book hotel rooms to conceal his identity.
Yesterday the immigration police team learned that George would be bringing a Thai woman to check into a hotel in On Nut area and apprehended him when he did so with further investigation also showing that he had overstayed in Thailand.
He was charged with fraud, introducing false information into a computer system, unauthorised access to a computer system, and overstaying his visa and then transferred to Thonglor police station for legal proceedings.
