THE 11 minor earthquakes that struck Surat Thani province since yesterday with the strongest being 3.2 magnitude on the Richter scale at a depth of two kilometres hitting at 2.07 a.m. today (Feb. 12) occurred due to movement in the Khlong Marui Fault Zone (KMFZ), PPTVHD36 said.
The Department of Mineral Resources said these minor earthquakes, totalling 11 as of 2 p.m. today, hit Khao Phang subdistrict, Ban Ta Khun district of this southern province.
The epicenter is approximately 10km southeast of Ratchaprapha Dam (aka Cheow Lan Dam) and a short distance from Ban Ta Khun District Office with people in the vicinity feeling tremors but no damage reported.
The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and officials at the Ratchaprapha Dam have confirmed that the tremors did not affect EGAT’s power plants nor stability of this or other dams. They have inspected these structures and found them to be in normal condition.
KMFZ, oriented in a northeast-southwest direction, had exhibited left lateral strike-slip faulting.
