A LARGE dome-shaped building within the Metropolitan Electricity Authority training and skills testing centre in Samut Prakan province collapsed at around noon today (Feb. 9) with rescuers who rushed to the scene to help those possibly trapped in the rubble not allowed in and initial report indicating two persons got injured, Naewna newspaper and Amarin TV said.
Officials were alerted of the sudden collapse of this building, which is within MEA’s Bang Pli New Town housing estate in Bang Sao Thong district, at around 11.30 to 11.45 a.m. but there was power outage in the area.
Volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation and Bang Phli emergency medical services arrived at the scene at noon and saw that the steel structure and domed roof had completely collapsed with staff and workers possibly having got injured.
However they were not allowed to enter, with officials stating that they would handle everything themselves and did not want support from outsiders as this is a state enterprise complex under the jurisdiction of Bang Sao Thong police station.
Engineers and their assistants are now urgently assessing the stability of the remaining structure to prevent further collapse.
Initial inspection failed to determine whether construction errors, structural deterioration, or other external factors led to the collapse. A detailed investigation by forensic experts and engineers will be conducted once the situation is under control.
