Army quashes online rumours of trouble at the border

THE THAI army this evening (Jan. 25) allayed social media panic that Cambodian troops either are repositing near the border or a clash had erupted at Ubon Ratchathani province as the country gets close to the Feb. 8 general election, Amarin TV said.

Fear of another round of fighting especially during the upcoming general election gripped netizens after a Facebook page entitled “Thai army” said Cambodia had once again evacuated its citizens from the border area and had also started the third round of planting landmines.

A message is also circulating on Line app that a border clash had erupted in Ubon Ratchathani.

However, Maj. Gen. Winthai Suwaree, the army’s spokesperson, clarified that no such information had been received and whenever there is important information to be conveyed to the public this is usually disseminated promptly.

A source at the Defence Ministry also confirmed that they have not received any reports on this matter.

In addition, Col. Richa Suksuwanon, deputy army spokesperson, also clarified that no report of a clash erupting in Ubon Ratchathani had been received while urging the public to only follow official news channels for accurate information.
