A FORMER KLATHAM MP who is currently seeking re-election in a southern constituency may eventually have a sum of 158 million baht worth of his wealth confiscated at a court order due to his alleged involvement in money-laundering activity.

The Anti-Money-Laundering Office today (Jan.14) announced that the agency is calling on public prosecutors to obtain the court order for the confiscation of the 158-million-baht assets owned by Chonnapat Naksua who is running under the Klatham tickets for a constituency of Songkhla on charges of involvement in money-laundering activity based on an illicit, online gambling business such as gimi888.com and other illegal betting platforms.

Chonnapat skipped over from the Palang Pracharath to the Klatham to seek re-election under the banners of the coalition partner in the Bhumjaithai-led caretaker government steered by de facto party boss Thammanat Prompao who has reportedly planned to grab some MP seats in the Feb.8 election from among a total of 59 southern constituencies.

Democrat leader/former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has earlier pledged to not align with Thammanat’s camp following the nationwide election, given the latter’s alleged, notorious connections with “grey” businesspersons, referring to transnational scam and money-laundering networks which have devastatingly preyed on Thai and world victims.

Thammanat has been accused of fostering personal associations with suspected scammers and money-launderers such as the likes of Benjamin Mauerberger, alias Ben Smith, who reportedly performed as business adviser to de facto Pheu Thai boss/inmate Thaksin Shinawatra and senior Cambodian leader Hun Sen.
