AFTER A mortar round landed on Thai territory this morning (Jan. 6) injuring a soldier in Ubon Ratchathani province Caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said relevant agencies had followed procedures stipulated in the agreements but as Cambodians had explained it was an accident it is not necessary for border residents to evacuate, PPTVHD36 said.

The Thai military and security forces have already protested to Cambodian security forces, requesting clarification while Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow had sent a letter to his Khmer counterpart Prak Sokhonn to clarify this violation of the ceasefire agreement.

One Thai soldier suffered minor shrapnel injury after the mortar round landed at Hill 469 at 7.40 a.m.

Anutin told reporters before the Cabinet meeting that as Cambodia claims the mortar round was fired accidentally it was not necessary to evacuate border residents but local administration and Interior Ministry officials are monitoring the situation.

Asked whether a third round of fighting might break out Anutin said his team is monitoring the situation but a National Security Council meeting had not yet been called.

Later Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, a spokesperson of the Cambodian Ministry of Defence, clarified that an explosion occurred at a garbage dump while Khmer troops were maintaining order within their territory with one of them sustaining serious injury while another one was lightly wounded.

“The coordinating teams of both countries have inquired and provided information to jointly resolve the issue,” she said.
