Cambodia bans drone flights and holds nationwide prayers for peace

CAMBODIA’S Defence Ministry banned the flying of all types of unmanned aerial vehicles after Thailand’s Second Army Region said over 250 drones flew from the neighbouring country to Thai sovereign territory, Amarin TV said this morning (Dec. 30).

Meanwhile Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, son of senior leader Hun Sen, led people nationwide in prayers for Khmer soldiers who died fighting along the border and for peace and end to the conflict.

“Cambodians across Cambodia sincerely intend to end the war as soon as possible through peaceful means, based on negotiation, diplomacy, international law, and a humanitarian spirit, to protect lives, maintain social stability, and ensure a peaceful future for the nation, which is the foundation of long-term development,” Fresh News outlet said.

Heavy drone infiltration was observed in various areas such as Chong Bok, Chong An Ma, Khao Sattasom, Sam Tae, Don Tual, Chong Krang, Prasat Ta Muen Thom and Chong Sai Takoo with this being in violation of measures to de-escalate tensions along the border after the Joint Statement upholding the ceasefire was signed last Saturday, the Second Army Region said.

A notice signed by Khmer Defence Minister Gen. Tea Seiha  prohibited the flying of all types of unmanned aerial vehicles in the capital Phnom Penh and surrounding provinces, especially those along the border, namely Koh Kong, Pursat, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear and Pailin.

Those violating this ban will face legal penalties, the Khmer defence ministry said.

Khmer army, navy, and air force commands, in cooperation with infantry commands, capital and provincial officials, as well as local officials, were told to intensify monitoring of drone usage to maintain security and order and if necessary take countermeasures, including the use of anti-drone systems.
