Influencers warned to stay away from Thai-Khmer border village

A FACEBOOK user issued a warning to Thai influencers to stay away from Ban Nong Chan village at the Thai-Khmer border in Sa Kaeo province and not stir up trouble there as it could lead to a confrontation with Cambodians, Naewna newspaper said this evening (Oct. 8).

The writer said in a post on “Prachan Sam See” Facebook page that he is issuing this warning out of concern for the future because lately some influencers and patriotic webpages have attempted to interfere in the move to evict Cambodians encroaching on three border villages in the province with Ban Nong Chan being one of them.

Thailand’s 1st Army Region commander Lt. Gen. Worayot Leungsuwan had sent a letter to Lt. Gen. Ek Sam Oun, commander of Khmer 5th Military Region, to evacuate their citizens from Ban Nong Chan, Ban Nong Ya Kaeo and Ban Ta Phraya in Sa Kaeo province by Tuesday (Oct. 7) or else the Thai side would not attend the next Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting scheduled to take place during Oct. 10-12.

However the Cambodian general refused to comply stating in his letter that evacuating these villagers would violate existing bilateral agreements and exceed the authority of RBC, as the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Joint Boundary Committee (JBC).

The Facebook writer said that these influencers and patriotic pages have issued statements vowing to “tear down the fences of Cambodian people’s homes themselves” and “if the government doesn’t do it, they will themselves do it.”

While patriotism is good, the writer warned that people should not resort to vigilante justice because this will lead to the legal system collapsing.

They would also become victims of third party agitators, he said, urging them to let the police and military handle this issue as it is their direct responsibility to do so.

“We have full control over them and can freely scrutinise and express our opinions,” he said.
