MP slams govt for inviting American journalist critical of Thailand to visit

FAIR Party’s MP slammed the government for inviting an American journalist on an all-expense-paid weeklong visit to Thailand after he had criticised the country in a live news stream which has now been deleted, Amarin TV said.

Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office, invited Mr. Michael B. Alfaro to visit Thailand offering to cover all expenses, including airfare, hotel, transportation  and meals, so that he could acertain for himself the truth about the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border.

However Fair Party’s only MP Kannavee Suebsang questioned who and how important Alfaro is that he has to be invited to visit Thailand for free for seven days even though Thai journalists are already taking action against him.

This Thai government lacks any expertise with this being an international political issue and not just proceedings in the Thai parliament where the government with its majority always wins, he said, adding this is worse than bad.

US news media outlets have confirmed that Alfaro is not a White House reporter and it is unclear which news organisation he is attached to, Jirayu said

Sources revealed that Alfaro’s live news stream on the Cambodian side of the border occurred after he was invited to visit the neighbouring country by Mr. Son Sopeep, the owner of a PR company working for the Cambodian government who covered every dollar of his trip’s expenses, Jirayu added.

In a Facebook post Alfaro said:

“I’m currently on the ground in Cambodia, but I’ve just received an invitation from the Thai government to cross over and hear their side of the story firsthand.

“As a journalist, my mission is to uncover the full truth behind this border conflict—on both sides— and report it directly to the American people, and the world.

“After meeting with Thai officials, I’ll return with my findings and brief President Trump, so he can make a fully informed decision about how to move forward toward lasting peace between Cambodia and Thailand.

“Please provide the best point of contact to make this happen.”
