Fearful residents flee border district

FEARING another round of clashes could break out along the Thai-Cambodian border at any moment residents of a Sisaket district packed up and left their homes despite no evacuation order being issued, Thai Rath newspaper said today (Aug. 13).

Reporters observed that there is a significant increase in vehicles leaving Kantharalak district and moving along Highway 221 (Kantharalak-Khao Phra Wihan) since last night.

It is villagers in Sao Thon Chai subdistrict where a lot of rockets and artillery fell during the five-day clashes who are most fearful with a lot of them packing and leaving.

Upon being questioned these villagers said they decided to move their families and belongings to a safer area even though community leaders have not issued an evacuation order because they distrust the ceasefire fearing a new round of clashes could erupt anytime.

This subdistrict’s village headman said while no evacuation order had been issued the villagers were advised to monitor the situation closely. Their decision to leave is for peace of mind as they have been evacuated many times already.

However at 10.12 p.m. the Second Army Region confirmed in a Facebook message that “Regarding the situation along the border, the Suranaree Task Force remains at normal status and not tense as reported on social media. The public is asked not to panic.”
