WITH the selling price of 96.5% real gold jewellery reaching 53,500 baht a baht weight this morning (Apr. 26) a shop in Nonthaburi too has increased the price of imitation gold jewellery by 50 baht, TV Channel 7 said.
As of 9.04 a.m. this morning the Thai Gold Traders Association set the selling price of 96.5% real gold bars at 52,700 baht a baht weight and buying price 52,600 baht a baht weight.
With the selling price of 96.5% real gold jewellery set at 53,500 baht a baht weight, the declared buying price is 51,650.12 baht a baht weight.
The shop in Nonthaburi which sells imitation gold jewellery has seen sales increase by almost 20 percent a month as a result of the price of real gold ornaments soaring so high leading to buyers who could no longer afford them turning to fake gold pieces.
However, as imitation gold jewellery has some real gold in it, the production cost of these fake pieces too have soared which has led to this shop increasing its price by 50 baht a piece. This is because it wants to maintain the quality of its products and can no longer shoulder higher costs.
The unidentified owner of this shop said some traders have been selling substandard and poor-quality imitation gold jewellery with a few of his customers having been fooled by them.
The higher the price of real gold the more popular imitation gold jewellery becomes with this being an opportunity for unscrupulous traders to palm off low-quality pieces at high prices so buyers should beware, he added.
