Tourist killed by falling tree branch in Phuket

 

A LITHUANIAN man holidaying in Phuket died after a pine tree branch fell on his head as he was riding his motorcycle along Nai Thon Beach road, Thalang district, Thai Rath  newspaper and TV Channel 7 said this morning (March 21).

Pol. Lt. Col. Wisanu Chalok, an investigation officer at Sakhu police station, was notified by Mr. Thanapong Keonun, headman of village number four, Sakhu subdistrict, that a pine tree branch and broken off and crushed the head of a tourist, killing him on the spot. He quickly took a team to investigate the accident after calling for an ambulance.

At the scene the police team found Mr. Arijus Norkus, 42, a Lithuanian national, lying motionless on the road after the broken tree branch had hit his helmet and crushed his head. Rescuers had tried to save his life by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) but he died at the scene.

This same tree branch also hit another motorcycle that a second unidentified foreign tourist was riding close by but while the motorbike got damaged, he was safe.

The police team together with a forensic doctor took several photos of the accident before handing his body to  Kusontham Foundation to take to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a detailed autopsy.
