A NEW YEAR’S DAY futsal match at Pattani Central Prison today (Jan. 1) turned violent leading to one inmate being killed and 12 others injured with one in critical condition, Amarin TV said.
Pol. Col. Jeffrey Sailamanakul, superintendent of Pattani City police station, immediately sent a police team to the prison upon being alerted of the fight among inmates leading to a death and injuries.
When the team arrived they saw that rescue workers and five ambulances from Pattani Hospital were already taking the injured inmates to the hospital for medical treatment.
The one who died had been stabbed in the torso with a sharp object and suffered multiple bruises while most of the others had wounds, some had cracked their head, and multiple bruises.
The melee erupted at the football field in the prison where futsal matches took place yesterday and this morning for relaxation and exercise.
However cheerleaders started brawling with the players triggering the fight where sharp objects were used to attack each other.
The guards then moved in and the situation began to improve.
One injured inmate told a reporter that he was not involved in the dispute that turned violent and only wanted to stop his friends from attacking the others but ended up being attacked himself.
Police are currently investigating the outbreak of violence to find out who all were involved after which charges will be filed against them and any sentence added to their original jail term.
