THE CRIMINAL Court on Ratchadapisek road today (Nov. 25) ordered the detention of fraud suspect on the run Dr. Boon Vanasin’s ex-wife and daughter pending consideration of documents after they submitted 2 million baht each for bail, Naewna newspaper said.
The next hearing on a bail request by Mrs. Charuwan Vanasin, 79, and their daughter Ms. Nalin Vanasin, 51, the first and second defendant, was set for Thursday Nov. 28.
The court ruled that as there were many supporting documents that had to be considered in ruling on their bail request these will be sent to the investigators to go through until the next hearing.
The two of them were taken to Central Women’s Correctional Institution for detention.
Huai Khwang police have objected to bail for the two of them fearing that they might escape.
They said Dr. Boon, 86, was the sole person who signed the cheques given to 247 victims who lost a total of 7.6 billion baht with these being issued by Thanachart Bank, Central Plaza Rama 9 branch.
Checking his account at this bank showed that after investors transferred the money either on the same day or within three days it was transferred to another account. Dr Boon had also halted payment for the cheques he had signed.
Police also found out that Charuwan, while still married to Dr. Boon, had signed various contracts and cheques as guarantor as did their daughter Nalin.
Most of the offenses against Dr. Boon come under the Cheque Act with the majority of the victims being businessmen in the medical sector who got taken in by Dr. Boon and some brokers that they were raising funds for five medical projects. These include a cancer centre in the Pinklao area, a wellness centre in Rama 3 area, three hospitals in Laos, a joint investment in a hospital in Vietnam and an IT business project.
Initially the interest was paid but later this stopped with the cheques bouncing at the banks.
Charuwan had told police that her ex-husband is currently in China and the International Affairs Division is working on requesting the Interpol to issue a red notice for his arrest.
