Polling agency moves to strip southern senator of status

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

THE ELECTION COMMISSION is seeking termination by court of the senatorial status of a certain southern senator due to his alleged involvement in a previous vote-buying activity.

The Constitutional Court has been recommended by the Election Commission to deprive Senator Somchai Lenglak of his senatorial status following his alleged involvement in buying votes from among constituents of Songkhla whilst unsuccessfully running under the Bhumjaithai tickets for MP last year.

Allegedly assisted by unnamed persons associated with the Bhumjaithai under de facto party boss Newin Chidchob, Somchai was elected senator contesting in the category of independent professions earlier this year.

The Election Commission’s latest move has been made as an aftermath of the Supreme Court’s ruling earlier delivered to the extent that Somchai be legally prohibited from assuming political positions at any levels for a 10-year period due to his involvement in such electoral irregularities.

If eventually deposed by the Constitutional Court of his senatorial status, the notorious senior lawmaker will be automatically replaced with a senatorial candidate already reserved in pecking order by the polling agency.
