Provincial prosecutor held on bribery charges

A PROSECUTOR in Nakhon Si Thammarat was arrested today (July 31) on the charges of taking a bribe from a man facing a land grab case just as the victim went to his office to give the second instalment of the payoff, TV Channel 7 said today (July 31).

Mr. Niwatchai Gasemmongkol, secretary-general of National Anti-Corruption Commission, together with a police team headed by Pol. Maj. Gen. Jaroonkiat Pankaew, deputy chief of Central Investigation Bureau, arrested Mr. Chatnarin (surname withheld), 53, at the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office under an arrest warrant issued by the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases on July 11.

Chatnarin, whose role is a moderator at this prosecutor’s office, was charged with misusing his authority and failing to perform his duties in receiving assets or benefits for himself.

The victim, who is being prosecuted on land grab charges, said the prosecutor had told him he could clear this case if 200,000 baht was paid to him.

Initially the victim was afraid to not comply so handed over the first instalment of 50,000 baht to the prosecutor.

He then filed a complaint with the National Anti-Corruption Commission with the graft-busters gathering evidence and liaising with the court and the police in moving in to arrest the prosecutor just as the victim handed over the balance 150,000 baht bribe.
