Police deny bulletproof vests made from plywood in use

AFTER a photo of an alleged police bulletproof vest made from plywood went viral online, the Police Ordnance Division quickly denied it has procured such ineffective body armour for junior police officers to use, Amarin TV said this morning (July 22).

A Thai-language webpage “Want to be Famous, We will Arrange it, Return – Part 6” said in a message accompanying the photo of plywood bulletproof vest, “Lowest point for the National Police, pity lower-level officers … bulletproof vest stuffed with plywood.”

The Police Ordnance Division said it has checked and would like to clarify that the National Police never procured ballistic vests, or bulletproof vests, that used wooden boards as material.

The inspections are transparent, verifiable and comply with relevant laws and regulations.

This police division urged any police officer or agency that detects faulty body armour to submit it for testing.

According to Wikipedia, bulletproof vests, also known as ballistic vests or body armour, are typically made from vest-shaped panels of advanced plastic polymer, composed of numerous layers of high-strength ballistic material. Most commonly this is Kevlar, Polyethylene (PE), Spectra Shield, Twaron, Dyneema, Steel, or Ceramic.

The bulletproof vests worn by most police officers and security guards are made with many layers of tightly-woven fabric such as Kevlar.

Bulletproof vests for soldiers are heavier and stronger than the bulletproof vests worn by police officers and security guards, because soldiers need protection from rifle and machine gun bullets. Bulletproof vests for soldiers often have flat pieces of ceramic material or a strong metal such as titanium. These materials can stop bullets from many rifles and machine guns.
