A THAI escaped convict who was arrested in Bali, Indonesia, last Thursday where he was found holding a fake Indonesian passport and pretended to be dumb because he could not speak the language appeared stress free and cheerful upon meeting Justice Minister Thawee Sodsong in Indonesia this afternoon (June 2), Naewna newspaper said.
Mr. Chaowalit Thongduang, or Sia Pang Nanode, was caught in Bali after being on the run for 222 days but is now being brought back to Thailand on Tuesday June 4.
While serving a 20 years and six months jail term for attempted murder in 2022, he escaped from Maharat Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital on Oct. 22, 2023 after being taken there for dental treatment but afterwards admitted upon collapsing due to leg pains. Even though he was restrained to the bed and was wearing leg shackles he escaped that night.
When Indonesian officials brought Chaowalit to meet Thawee, he was all smiles, and told the minister that he was not involved in drug trafficking and had travelled to several countries before being caught in Bali.
Thawee added that Assistant National Pol. Lt. Gen. Prachuap Wongsuk had represented Thai police in coordinating the escaped convict’s repatriation with Indonesian authorities.
He will be flown in a Thai air force jet straight to Nakhon Si Thammarat because he has to appear before Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Court for this new case in keeping with court regulations. However after that he could participate in court hearings via video conference system.
He will then be taken to a high security prison.
Thawee added that Chaowalit’s repatriation is not being made under a prison exchange deal but is based on cooperation between the two countries. Thailand had just handed over a major criminal to Indonesia while they were sending Chaowalit back to Thailand.
