PRIME MINISTER Srettha Thavisin said during his visit to Italy that the Italian company Leitner Ropeways has offered to both sell cable cars and string them to the top of a mountain at Phu Kradueng National Park with their system using clean energy thus environmentally friendly, Naewna and Thai Rath newspaper said today (May 18).
However, while this project is interesting, he mentioned that the opinions of all parties must be listened to.
This project has been discussed on and off since 1982 with conservationists objecting to it as they are worried about environmental impact while some local residents are keen.
Srettha added that the good point about this proposal is that it will take only six months to install the sustainable cable car system, also called ropeways, to Phu Kradueng mountaintop.
“Thailand is now focusing on running a cable car line at Phu Kradueng National Park and this company has proposed to study whether it could be done. The next step would be to hire a project consultant to study the feasibility and how much investment would be required. I believe this is something good and we should proceed with it,” he said.
He admitted that Leitner had previously shown interest in running this cableway with an MP from Loei mentioning it to him.
He drove three hours to the company’s head office near the Austrian border to hold talks with the executives yesterday.
Asked whether the company is interested in launching projects in other parts of Thailand, Srettha said while many other provinces too need tourism promotion, doing so can only proceed step by step.
