DURING A ceremony for a man who died after falling into a tube well at a traffic island in front of Lat Phrao Soi 49 yesterday (May 3) his family said they are demanding 10 million baht compensation from Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) while urging the agency to quickly replace wood planks covering these tube wells with something sturdier, Sanook.com said today.
Mr. Kamthorn Jaruanan, 59, died upon plunging down the seven-metre-deep tube well while crossing the road with his two older sisters and younger brother, Mr. Khamphon, collecting his body from Police Hospital at 11 a.m. for cremation at Wat That Thong then performing a religious ceremony at the spot he died.
Khamphon said his deceased brother had promised to look after everyone in the family and was taking care of their sickly eldest sister with whom he lived. With him gone it is now difficult for the family to manage and they therefore decided to claim 10 million baht compensation but expect there to be negotiations.
An autopsy showed that Kamthorn died from drowning and a broken neck.
Kamphon added that the family thought MEA Deputy Governor Thitiwut Ngernkhlai was not sincere because he first said he would attend the funeral but then changed his mind and is now sending his secretary instead, suspecting this indicates he thinks he will be able to easily end this matter.
He called on MEA to quickly change tube well covers because the wooden planks place across them are light and would give way even if a child steps on them. Moreover they are surrounded with plants making it difficult to notice them.
“If the agency claims they do not have enough covers, why is it that this tube well was immediately covered with a cement one, this shows these cement covers exist but the agency is careless and refused to use them,” he said.
He added that if they are afraid that these covers will be stolen why don’t they install survelliance cameras.
“The budget for procuring tube well covers is state budget so why is the agency still slow,” he asked.
