DIN DAENG police had to carry Ms. Tantawan Tuatulanond, or Tawan, to a police vehicle in transferring her and her colleague, Mr. Natthanon Chaimahabud, or Frank, to Chalong Krung police station last night (Feb. 13) after being earlier arrested for honking their car horn at a royal motorcade and arguing with policemen on Feb. 4, Matichon newspaper said today (Feb. 14).
Mr. Natthaphon Khumwongsakul, a lawyer from Thai Lawyers for Human Rights, said at 5.50 p.m. that he had yet to see the record of their arrest but initially only two of them had been apprehended.
While still looking into the details of what sections of the Criminal Code had been cited he only briefly knows that Section 116, which carried a penalty of seven years’ imprisonment for sedition, had been mentioned.
Both of them have denied all charges brought against them.
At 7.25 p.m. as police tried to take Tawan to a police van for transfer to Chalong Krung police station, she looked distressed and lay down so had to be carried there.
Natthaphon said this was initially a misdemeanour case and upon being summoned they asked for postponement as they were studying. However an additional charge was brought against them under Section 116 leading to arrest warrants being issued and the two of them being apprehended.
He added that police would probably take them to the court to ask to place them under an initial 12-day detention today and he would then apply for bail.
Bail can be requested in every case because according to the constitution an accused person is considered innocent until the court passes its ruling, he pointed out.
