Dead toddler’s dad fuming, paid couple 500 baht a day to take care of his son

THE real father of  a two-year and two-month-old boy who a couple claiming to be his adoptive parents said choked to death while eating sticky rice and they then put his body in the refrigerator firmly stated that he did believe his son died from choking and that he sent 500 baht everyday to the couple to raise him, Naewna newspaper said this evening (Jan. 6).

Mr. Nopparat (surname withheld), 29, Nong Nai’s real dad, said upon arriving to be questioned by police that he met the Mr. Hannarong Phraiphanom, or Bank, 31, and Ms. Marisa Thongiam, or Koi, 26, through a friend and gave his son to them to raise two months ago because he was working and did not have time to do so and it seemed they loved children.

He also  punctually sent them 500 baht everyday.

The last time he met his son was towards the end of December and at that time there were no signs of Nong Nai being harmed. However he did not believe he choked to death while eating sticky rice because when the boy was with him he gave him this to eat everyday and he could eat everything.

He added that he knew Hannarong  was hot-tempered but trusted his wife Marisa as she would be the one to raise his son. Even last night they called and said they were taking Nong Nai on a trip to Koh Larn and he had transferred 300 baht to them.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Prasat Phaenpha, Nonthaburi provincial police commander, personally questioned Hannarong and Marisa who related that Nong Nai had choked on sticky rice the grandfather had given him to eat.

They admitted that the reason they did not report his death nor take him to the hospital was because they got frightened and lacked legal knowledge.

They added that the boy died on Jan.2 and they only put his body in the fridge on Jan. 4 after it started smelling. They also admitted discipling him when he was stubborn and disobedient.

“Despite all the testimony, police are still not convinced but have to wait for the result of the forensic examination by Thammasat University Rangsit Hospital to confirm whether there is any sticky rice in Nong Nai’s stomach.

“Initially police have filed charges of not reporting a death and concealing the corpse against the two suspects,” he said.

Police are still questioning the boy’s real father and Hannarong’s younger sister Ms. Kik, 24.
