AN AMBULANCE rushing to pick-up a patient jumped the red light at an intersection in Prachinburi and hit a vegetable pick-up truck with four hospital employees being injured in the collision this evening (Nov. 6), Matichon newspaper said.
At 7.30 p.m. Pol. Lt. Col. Suwit Suijaroon, an inspector at Ra Bo Pai police station, was alerted of the accident at the intersection of roads 3079 and 359 in Krok Somboon subdistrict, Si Maha Phot district, and quickly rushed there with rescuers.
At the scene they found the ambulance flipped on its side with one of the rear wheels detached and lying five metres away. A badly-injured woman wearing a hospital uniform was lying on a grassy area by the roadside while three others were likewise injured and trapped in the vehicle. The rescuers quickly got those stuck in the ambulance out and rushed all four to the hospital.
A CCTV camera clip showed that at 6.57 p.m. the ambulance ran the red light to go pick up a patient in the Ban Wang Kru area. As the hospital vehicle almost cleared the red light, it suddenly hit the vegetable truck coming in the other direction, with the latter vehicle likewise having flipped on its side but the driver was unhurt and stood there waiting for the police.
Upon being questioned, Mr. Winat Khamwilert, 49, the pick-up truck driver said he had loaded vegetables at Sa Kaeo province and was on his way to deliver the cargo in Ratchaburi when the accident suddenly occurred.
He added that he drove through the intersection because the light was green but when he reached the middle he heard a loud whistle and tried to brake but because of the heavy cargo could not stop and was then hit by the ambulance.
People in the neighbourhood said accidents often occur at this intersection because drivers are in a hurry and tend to run the red light.
