Flood alert for Bangkok as torrential rain is expected

THE Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation issued a flood alert for Bangkok from Wednesday Aug. 30 to Sunday Sept. 3 as northern and southern monsoons will likely bring heavy to extra-heavy rain in some areas, TV Channel 7 said today (Aug. 28).

The alert was issued after the  Meteorological Department said in its forecast this evening that a strong monsoon trough is sliding down from the North to cover the Northeast and Central regions while the southwesterly monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand itself and the Gulf of Thailand will become stronger.

This will lead heavy to very heavy rain in some areas in the North, Northeast, Central and the South including Bangkok and its vicinity.

The department has coordinated with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to prepare for flooding over the next few days. Machinery and rescue teams are being sent to flood prone areas to help the people immediately should a disaster occur.

The public is warned to follow weather updates and avoid areas that regularly get flooded. This could be easily done via the Thai Disaster Alert app.

They can ask for help by either calling the hotline 1784 or sending a message via Line by linking up with ID @1784DDPM  all 24 hours.
