Russian tourist drowns at Patong beach

A RUSSIAN tourist drowned in front of his wife while swimming in the sea off Patong beach this morning (May 27) with the lifeguard who quickly rescued him and administered first aid failing to revive him, Matichon newspaper said.

Pol.Lt.Col. Chayakorn Tangsakul, an inspector at Patong police station, received a report of the tourist drowning at 7.55 a.m. and after contacting relevant agencies went to the scene of the accident.

There he found that a Patong lifeguard, Kusoldharm Foundation rescuers and a Patong Hospital team had already performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the tourist after he was rescued but he did not revive.

The drowned man’s wife told the policeman she and her husband, Mr. Rafelovich Pavel, 53, were Russians holidaying in Thailand. This morning they came to Patong beach from a closeby hotel they were staying in.

Her husband swam out about seven kilometres when strong waves and winds led to him drowning. She alerted the lifeguard who brought him back to the shore and called Kusoldharm Foundation rescuers and Patong Hospital team to come and help him give CPR but he did not revive having already died in the sea.

Police will now notify the Russian consulate and embassy about the tourist’s death.
