Over 3,000 arrested over illegal World Cup gambling

 

THE police drive against illegal gambling on the 22nd Fifa World Cup matches over the eight days since the tournament started last Sunday (Nov. 20) has so far netted 3,178 punters, bookmakers and bet receivers, Matichon newspaper said today (Nov. 27).

Yesterday 620 gambling suspects were rounded up in an offline sweep and among them were six bookmakers and 314 punters while an online drive netted another 33 punters adding up to 653. Also seized were 353 betting tickets worth 108,105 baht and 2,900 baht in cash adding up to 111,005 baht.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Panurat Lakboon, assistant commissioner of the national police, also said that from Nov. 19 to Nov. 26 altogether 2,880 offline gamblers were arrested with 47 being bookmakers, 2,819 punters and 13 bet receivers.

At the same time 298 online gamblers were nabbed with 23 being bookmakers and 275 punters.

This takes the total to 3,178 gambling suspects rounded up during these eight days with 6,270 betting tickets worth 988,766 baht and 94,660 in cash seized adding up to 1,083,426 baht.
