Traders shocked by lighting closure of Chiang Mai shopping mall

DISMAY spread across Chiang Mai city today (May 5) after the lightning closure of the popular Promenada Resort Mall with store operators taken aback because they had not been given advance notice and suddenly had to pack their goods and leave, TV Channel 7 said.

Particularly badly hit were those who had brought fresh food to cook for sale today.

A letter that store operators received from the shareholders of this resort mall, Joint S. Property Company Ltd., Promenada Chiang Mai Company Ltd. and European CC (Thailand) Company Ltd., said it had been badly affected by the Covid pandemic since 2020 onwards.

“The shopping centre had tried to shoulder the financial burden having to bear expenses that exceeded full income for the past three years.  Great efforts were made to prevent shops from being affected by this situation through giving discounts on rent including refraining from collecting rent in certain months so that the shops and shopping centre could go through the situation together,” the letter said.

The letter added that as the company could no longer cope with the financial woes it was now necessary to close Promenada Resort Mall temporarily from today onwards or until it receives fresh cash injection from investors.

Store operators were informed that they would be alerted if there is any change in future.

This resort mall, which opened in 2013 and is located in the suburbs of this northern city, has 50,000 square metres of shopping space within which are a green frontage area, SF Cinema City, a medium-size conference room, a food court, an outdoor amphi-theatre for outdoor performances, a garden, a 20-lane strike bowl, karaoke rooms, a kids edutainment centre and several brand stores, Chiangmailocator.com said.
