Army’s newly-opened café for the public draws flak

ATTRACTING a lot of attention and along with it wide-ranging criticism is the 4th Army Region’s Facebook post announcing the opening of its Chor Coffee shop for the general public at Thepsatri Si Sunthon Camp, Nakhon Si Thammarat province, Sanook.com said today (Jan. 21).

The 4th Army Region boasts that nearby this café are some good spots to take photos particularly at the bamboo bridge across the lotus pond with promotional photos showing good-looking soldiers both in and out of uniform highlighting them.

“Sip coffee … and watch soldiers, this is now open! The spot to check out is Chor Coffee shop, coffee lovers must not miss. There are also beautiful spots for photography, on a bamboo bridge in the middle of the lotus pond, or in the evening enjoy a duck-shaped pedalo boat ride. Very good atmosphere. Location: Thepsatri Si Sunthon Camp, the café  is open for business from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. everyday. More details at Chor Coffee, 5th Engineer Battalion. Thepsatri Camp,” the promotional text said.

However the post attracted a wide range of criticism. Many people said they are interested in going to use the service but questioned the suitability of the army running this kind of a business.

Some wanted the army to clarify the details of this café both in terms of investment and what budget is being used for this new venture. They also wonder where the profits will go and exactly what is the duty of a soldier.
