ACROSS the worlds of fashion and interiors, the Pantone colour of the year is a very big deal.

The colour they select is supposed to sum up the mood of the year, and trickles down through trends in everything from nail polish to wall paint.

For 2021, there were two colours chosen: Ultimate Grey and Illuminating, a vibrant yellow.

This time around, Pantone has introduced a brand new blue shade to be named the colour of the year for 2022: Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri.

This is the first time ever that Pantone has created a new shade for its colour of the year.

Very Peri is described as a “dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet-red undertone”. It’s supposed to sum up a moment of “transition”, as we move into a world forever changed by the pandemic.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director at the Pantone Colour Institute, says: “As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue colour family.

“Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.

“Creating a new colour for the first time in the history of our Pantone Colour of the Year educational colour programme reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place.

“As society continues to recognise colour as a critical form of communication and as a way to express and effect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red-violet-infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lie before us.”

The Pantone Colour Institute adds: “Blending the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red, this happiest and warmest of all the blue hues introduces an empowering mix of newness.”

“Displaying a carefree confidence and a daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit, inquisitive and intriguing PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives.

“Rekindling gratitude for some of the qualities that blue represents complemented by a new perspective that resonates today, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri places the future ahead in a new light.”

Don’t panic if you’re not getting all that from the shade. It’s also just a nice hue of blue.

We can see it translating easily to our homes, as a nice accent to liven up all the neutrals, and into our wardrobes.

The Pantone Colour Institute recommends Very Peri as a “novel statement” for eyes, nails, and hair.

They’ve also teamed up with Microsoft to launch a bunch of Very Peri products, including custom Teams backgrounds, Windows wallpaper, a new Edge theme, and a PowerPoint template.

Plus, Artechouse’s New York space will open an exhibition of the colour in 2022, so you can fully immerse yourself in the blue.

Oh, and of course no announcement is complete without a reference to NFTs, so don’t worry, that’s happening too.

Pantone has collabed with Tezos and Paris-based artist Polygon1993 to create “a digital representation of the colour and the message that the colour embodies”.

Truly, what a time to be alive.
