WHILE Thailand logged 13,576 coronavirus cases and 117 deaths this morning (Sept. 19), a big drop from over 20,000 a day last month, there was a spike in Phuket with 242 new infections yesterday, Siam Rath newspaper said.
The Phuket information Centre stated that none of the new batch of patients were from overseas but one emerged from the Sandbox scheme. There were also no new cases from another scheme helping those infected return to their home provinces.
Altogether 3,743 Covid patients are still under treatment on the island but 162 were discharged yesterday taking total recoveries to 4,950. There was one additional fatality raising the death toll to 49.
Five more people who got a positive antigen test result were quarantined and there are currently 1,139 people so placed.
The island’s cumulative confirmed total now stands at 8,539 cases with 10 infected in other provinces, 23 infected in other countries, 96 emerging from the Phuket Sandbox scheme and 42 from the scheme allowing patients to return to their home provinces.
Meanwhile nationwide out of today’s 13,576 cases 12,048 emerged from surveillance and healthcare systems, 1,120 through proactive search in communities, 395 got infected in prisons and detention centres and 13 overseas arrivals were quarantined.
This takes the national cumulative confirmed total since April 1 to 1,447,614.
Another 12,492 patients were cured taking total recoveries since April 1 to 1,302,593 with 131,095 patients still undergoing treatment.
