Daily Covid count hits 20,920, Phuket logs 69 new cases

THAILAND’S daily Covid count surged to a new high of 20,920 cases and 160 deaths today (August 5) with Phuket too posting 69 new cases among whom are four Sandbox tourists, Amarin TV said.

Of today’s large batch of cases, 20,658 were among the general public and 262 in prisons and detention centres.

This took cumulative confirmed total since the start of current wave in April to 664,442 cases.

At the same time 17,926 more patients have been cured, taking total recoveries in the current wave to 446,306,  while 213,910 patients are still undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile after Phuket posted 69 new coronavirus cases today, with four of them being Phuket Sandbox scheme tourists, and one Thai person dying, many places were shut down for cleaning and disinfection to control the spread of the virus.

Among them is the Ban Zaan fresh market which the Phuket Municipality ordered closed for seven days from today till August 11 after some foreign workers were found to be infected.

Meanwhile the Thep Krasattri Subdistrict Administrative Organisation office, in Thalang district, was also closed today and tomorrow after some staff members got infected and it will now reopen on Monday August 9 when a big cleaning is completed.
