Thai army gears up for Myanmar refugee influx

ARMY Chief Gen. Narongphan Jitkaewthae went to Tak province to inspect the readiness to accommodate Myanmar refugees with seven places arranged to receive and shelter them, Thai Rath newspaper said today (March 18, 2021).

He was briefed by Third Army commander Lt. Gen. Apichet Suesat and in the afternoon flew by helicopter to inspect the initial receiving points and gathering sites at Mae Ramat, Phop Phra and Mae Sot districts. These are schools, stadiums, a football field and a pier.

Gen. Narongphan said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is concerned about the weeks-long protests and brutal suppression by security forces in Myanmar and wants good preparation made on the Thai side for refugee influx.

The Prime Minister does not want the coronavirus outbreak, which is just starting to improve in Thailand, to worsen and emphasised border protection.
