Pita: Activist’s death an opportunity to put out political fire

FORMER Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat said today (May 19) the tragic death of  political activist Netiporn “Bung” Sanesangkhom due to a hunger strike during detention at a Bangkok prison is an opportunity to remove the fuel from political fire should all sides reach an agreement, Naewna newspaper said.

Speaking at Bitec before his party’s first policy fest entitled “Move Forward Big Bang”, he put forward five personal demands with these being clarity from the Corrections Department; upstream judicial procedure mainly the prosecutors and police; the government should introduce a policy to not fault those holding different political views; all parties should be able to hold talks and find a solution to this matter; and quickly introduce an amnesty without separating any groups.

“I hope this incident will be the last because I believe if all sides reach an agreement then we can remove the fuel from the political fire,” he said.

Regarding hearsay that Netiporn’s death occurred through incorrect insertion of a breathing tube, Pita  said the case doctor and Justice Minister Thawee Sodsong will be briefing her family on her death tomorrow and the public should wait to hear what the Corrections Department has to say.

Asked whether her death is linked to lese majeste, or Section 112 of the Criminal Code, charges brought against her, Pita said this is separate from her hunger strike which was to demand right of bail on world-recognised basis of presumption of innocence for defendants prior to court rulings.

Asked to comment on Netiporn’s bail being revoked because of repeated offences, Pita said he could not reply for her because she has passed away, but he presumes she was not fighting for herself alone but also her detained friends  and all Thais.
