A SIX-WHEEL truck taking over 70 Myanmar workers from a pineapple processing plant to their living quarters overturned and plunged down the roadside in Chonburi this evening (Oct. 15) injuring more than 60 of them, Amarin TV said.
At 6.40 p.m. Bo Thong police station and Sawang Het Ban Thung Hiang rescue unit were notified of this accident in Suwan subdistrict, Bo Thong district, and a police team together with rescuers quickly rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, they saw a blue, six-wheeled truck, outfitted with bench seating, had overturned in a deep ditch near a wooded area. Rescuers urgently assisted the victims, attending to those more seriously hurt first and transported them to Bo Thong Hospital for medical treatment.
Nine of the Myanmar workers, seven women and two men, required urgent medical treatment (yellow category) while 14 of them, 11 women and 3 men, suffered non-urgent/minor injuries (green category).
In addition, 36 other injured persons travelled to the hospital on their own, with some having been taken there by Good Samaritans prior to the arrival of rescuers. This takes the current reported number of victims receiving hospital care to 59. However, this figure is not yet an official final count, and the exact number of injured persons is still being verified.
The driver, Mr. Kiattisak Sukphan, 35, said while he was transporting the workers from the pineapple processing plant to their living quarters, the truck suffered brake failure, one wheel locked up while the brakes on the other side failed to engage, causing the vehicle to skid, lose control, veer off the road, and overturn.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances and cause of the accident, including an inspection of the vehicle’s condition and braking system. They are also gathering information regarding the total number of passengers and injured individuals in order to proceed with the necessary legal and administrative steps.
