MOST ELECTION commissioners were today (Sep. 16) taken to task for being literally submissive to the Bhumjaithai, core of the current coalition government, and returning favours for their highly-placed positions granted by an overwhelming majority of senators, who have been invariably responsive and loyal to the largest ruling party.
During floor debate on the Election Commission’s performance in the House of Representatives, chief opposition whip/People’s MP Parit Wacharasindhu referred to five out of the total seven commissioners who had allegedly managed to return favours to the largest ruling party as a whole by keeping a dozen Bhumjaithai figures including party leader/Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul intact from prosecution in the Supreme Court over 2024’s senatorial rigging scandals. Four of the five commissioners in question had been handpicked by an overwhelming, pro-Bhumjaithai majority of senators.
Those Bhumjaithai elements ranging from the prime minister, his partisan colleagues in cabinet and lawmakers to the party’s executive board members have been contentiously spared the litigation in the Supreme Court despite their alleged involvement in the vote-buying, electoral rigging conspiracy whilst the commissioners only resolved to prosecute 77 out of the total 229 suspects including 26 senators and a few others attached to or closely connected with the largest ruling party surreptitiously directed by de facto party boss Newin Chidchob, himself being among those suspects.
According to the chief opposition whip, the politically-oriented majority of the commissioners had deliberately overlooked the big picture of the premeditated, organised rigging plot since they apparently chose to not prosecute the Bhumjaithai elements who may have allegedly designed, masterminded and manipulated it, resulting in the landing of “victories” in the complicated, triple-tiered races to parliament for as many as 138 out of the total 200 senators.
Instead, he said, the majority of the commissioners had apparently handled the electoral rigging scandals on individual, non-mutually connected basis as opposed to the premeditated, organised conspiracy only to keep the prominent Bhumjaithai figures from prosecution in court.
The commissioners had not only apparently snubbed the organised fraud but perpetrated double standards in addressing the rigging allegations despite undeniable evidence of bloc-vote scripts earlier prepared and handed out prior to the final, national-tiered senatorial election by those associated with Newin’s camp.
Under the so-called “Blue regime”, the Bhumjaithai have been accused of managing to keep themselves above the law whilst running the country as core of the executive branch, given unwavering, hush-hush support from members of “independent” agencies such as the election commissioners plus the invariable servitude of those in the legislative branch whom Newin’s camp had allegedly turned into senators.
