COVID-19 cases are increasing Thailand with the total number of patients from Jan. 1 up to today, Aug. 28, reaching 94,402 with 14 deaths but it is the NB.1.8.1 variant which does not cause severe illness that is dominant, accounting for over 50.95% of cases, PPTVHD36 said.

The Department of Disease Control said this variant, also called “Nimbus” and is a branch of the JN.1, has a mutation in the spike protein which allows it to evade immunity and spread more easily but there is still no evidence of it causing more severe illness.

The latest data for the week Aug. 23-28 shows there were 11,451 new cases, comprising 10,774 outpatients and 677 inpatients. There were two additional deaths, with the highest cumulative number of patients being in Bangkok.

Majority of the deaths occurred in the working-age group of 20-39 years.

Even so, an update from the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, states that Covid-19 situation in Thailand remains stable and not a cause for concern. The focus now should be on maintaining good health and protecting oneself, as the weather has changed with it being normal for respiratory illnesses to reappear more easily.

Tips on coping with this disease:

– Observe your symptoms and check for any of the following: high fever, body aches, sore throat, runny nose, cough, shortness of breath, or close contact with someone infected with Covid-19;

– If you have symptoms or are in a high-risk group, get tested using a combined test kit (usually Covid-19, influenza A/B + RSV). If the result is positive, follow these steps:

– Isolate yourself, avoid contact with others, wear a face mask, maintain hygiene, wash your hands frequently, use separate personal items, and importantly, avoid contact with high-risk groups such as the elderly, young children, or those with weakened immune systems.

– For healthy individuals, get plenty of rest, take fever-reducing medication, and take care of yourself until symptoms improve. This usually takes about three to five days.

– If symptoms are severe or do not improve, it is recommended to see a doctor at a nearby hospital.
