A BIG group of 130 Thai men and women were deported from Laos today (Aug.13) after being rounded up for operating online gambling websites at the neighbouring country’s capital Vientiane, Amarin TV said this evening.
Pol. Col. Noppadol Rakchart, superintendent of Nong Khai Immigration Police, and Pol. Col. Jirawit Panyim, superintendent of Nong Khai City police station, and their team as well as officials from the Thai embassy in Vientiane received the suspects after they crossed back to Thailand via the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge that connects this northeastern province to Laos.
They were then taken to the Nong Khai Provincial Volunteer Defence Corps for screening by a multidisciplinary team. None were found to be a victim of human trafficking, fraud, or have any outstanding arrest warrant
Investigation revealed that all 130 had been working for six online gambling websites, earning an average of 14,000-18,000 baht per month. They had rented rooms near the St. Vegas casino in Vientiane with some having only been working there for a month.
They were all arrested during a major crackdown by Laotian officials this month and detained on charges of working without a permit and running online gambling websites. After the legal process in Laos was completed, Thai authorities coordinated for the repatriation of all 130 suspects for proceedings under Thai law.
