A SENIOR football player collapsed and died during a match in Nakhon Phanom province yesterday (April 25) with this attributed to his physical condition and the hot weather, TV Channel 7 and MNG Online said.
Mr. Watcharakorn Nithi, 46, a temporary employee and driver at Saharat Rangsarit School in Si Songkhram district, was a deeply passionate football player.
As a senior footballer of this district’s VIP team, he joined the match against Innosakhon VIP team. From the moment the referee blew the whistle to start the match until the end of the first half, Watcharakorn appeared normal.
However, at around 5 p.m., approximately 20 minutes into the second half, he suddenly collapsed. Fellow players and the medical team attempted CPR for over 10 minutes, but to no avail. He passed away on the field, leaving his family and teammates heartbroken.
This TV Channel’s reporters visited the deceased footballer’s home where his family was holding a funeral service for him.
They were told that Watcharakorn greatly loved football and the cause of his collapse could possibly be lack of sleep as he was the family’s breadwinner and had irregular sleeping patterns.
His wife said that on Friday evening, her husband showed her a photo of himself with his high school friends, pointing to one friend who he said, “has now gone.” She didn’t think it was a bad omen because her husband had never been seriously ill.
The Nithi family has faced a series of losses. Last year, their older son, 23, passed away from illness.
Their younger son, 21, suffered an accident requiring brain surgery, and although his condition has improved, he has now lost his father as well. Even so, he intends to complete his bachelor’s degree and earn money to take care of his mother to the best of his ability.
