Tourist Police hold talks on tourist security with Omani Ambassador

DISCUSSIONS on enhancing tourist security measures and suppressing tourism-related crime were held between Tourist Police and Omani Ambassador Issa bin Abdullah Al Alawi at the latter’s invitation recently, Naewna newspaper said today (April 5).

Pol. Maj. Gen. Pongsiayam Meekhantong, deputy commander of Tourist Police, said the talks were held at 11 a.m. on March 31 at the Omani embassy with this being a follow-up on two previous meetings on March 25.

Both sides exchanged views on strengthening tourist security measures, preventing and suppressing tourism-related crime, and the impact of the conflict in the Middle East on public confidence in Thailand’s tourism industry, with this aligning with the government’s current priorities.

The Thai side expressed gratitude to the Sultanate of Oman for its assistance in rescuing 20 crew members of Thai cargo ship Mayuree Naree after it was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz on March 11 as well as its crucial role in supporting negotiations with Iran, which enabled the safe passage of two oil tankers, one belonging to Bangchak Corp. Plc and the other SCG Chemicals Plc, through the strategically important strait, mitigating the impact on the general public.

In discussing the tourism situation in the Middle East and Thailand, the focus was on approaches to caring for and assisting Middle Eastern tourists stranded in Thailand due to the unrest in the region, and boosting cooperation in attracting more tourists from Oman and other Middle Eastern countries to Thailand.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Pongsiayam mentioned Tourist Police hotline 1155 which tourists can reach to seek assistance.

The Omani Ambassador expressed his willingness to cooperate with Thailand in all aspects and exchange information about tourists to further enhance security and strengthen good relations between the two countries.
