A TOWER crane that collapsed at Asoke intersection this morning (Feb. 7) seriously injuring two Myanmar workers narrowly missed pedestrians and some shops with employees joining those strolling by in fleeing in panic, Amarin TV said this afternoon.
A surveillance camera clip showed that the crane’s arm had snapped causing the structure to collapse at the construction site where a religious building plus a 100-car parking lot covering an area of 3,248 square metres is being built.
Parts of the crane, including its signal lights, fell on nearby shops and the road.
A news team from this television station inspected the site of the accident and got to speak to Ms. A (pseudonym), owner of a beauty parlour, who related that she was not at the scene when the accident occurred but her hairdressers heard a loud noise while cutting customers’ hair after which debris from this crane fell on her shop’s illuminated sign, damaging it.
Although she has not yet contacted the project owner, she mentioned that there have been vibrations from this construction site causing neighbours to be fearful.
She urged the authorities, and the project owner, to be more cautious and boost safety measures so that residents in this neighbourhood do not get injured.
The news team in surveying the construction site found that the main gate at Asoke Montri road was closed and there were no construction workers or staff within.
A male and a female Myanmar workers who were seriously injured in this accident were quickly rushed to the hospital.
A huge crane at the construction of a high-speed rail bridge fell on a Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani train just as it was passing Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) on Jan. 14 killing 30 people.
The very next day a construction crane fell on Rama II road crushing two vehicles with there being one fatality.
Other construction accidents have occurred on Rama II road with an engineer suffering a ruptured liver and later dying after two chunks of concrete fell on his pickup truck as he was passing beneath a flyover to Samut Sakhon where he worked on Apr. 29, 2025.
Then on May 6 soon after midnight a cable fell on a trailer truck and a pickup truck loaded with seafood from an overhead construction stretch causing severe damage to both vehicles but no injuries.
