THE Chinese government sent a large cargo plane carrying “emergency humanitarian aid” to Cambodia with Thai netizens closely following this development, Amarin TV said today (Dec. 28).
The Army Military Force Facebook page said at 11 a.m. today an Air China Boeing 747-4FTF (400F) cargo plane, flight number CAO10903, registration number B-2475, landed at Cambodia’s Techo International Airport. The flight reportedly originated from Shanghai with FlightRadar24 not showing a clear destination until it landed.
Subsequently, the Chinese government officially announced that it had delivered “emergency humanitarian aid” to the Cambodian government to alleviate the suffering of people severely affected by the recent tensions and clashes along the Cambodian-Thai border.
During the handover ceremony, Mr. Wang Wenbin, Chinese ambassador to Phnom Penh, who co-presided over the distribution of relief supplies, reaffirmed the strong relationship and China’s role in supporting peace and humanitarian efforts in the region.
Earlier Caretaker Prime Minister-cum-Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said with the ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia now in place all evacuated citizens can return home while he does not believe a Belarusian cargo plane flew weapons to Phnom Penh.
Regarding compensation for evacuees Anutin said the government had approved payment to those who were evacuated during the five-day conflict in July and this was done according to established procedures so there is a framework to follow.
On concerns about trusting Cambodia to uphold the current ceasefire amid reports that a Belarusian cargo plane possibly carrying weapons landed in Phnom Penh after a stopover in Mombasa, Kenya, then detouring Thai airspace opting to flying through Malaysian airspace to reach Cambodia, Anutin said such reports are unreliable with Thai security forces and the military investigating these matters and would have reported any potential risks to him.
Asked whether Cambodia could possibly reinforce troops and channel more weapons to the frontline during the ceasefire, Anutin replied: “We have established rules of engagement. Cambodia was the one that called for ceasefire negotiations and cooperated by attending the three-day General Border Committee meeting. The Joint Statement clearly states that both sides will not violate each other’s rules again, and we hope they will keep their promise this time.
“Today, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi invited the Foreign Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia to a meeting in Kunming, China, because China wants peace in this area. Therefore, we will need to reiterate and discuss these points.”
