ANOTHER Thai soldier died in heavy fighting at Sa Kaeo province and four others got injured, one critically, today (Dec. 23) while Burapha Task Force destroyed two buildings at Cambodia’s Poipet border town, opposite Aranyaprathet district on the Thai side, used as an operational base and an ammunition storage facilities but no longer inhibited by civilians.
Pvt. Thanapat Nanthawong died while fighting at Ban Nong Chan village, Khok Sung district, with this formerly being a refugee camp housing Cambodians.
However at 2 p.m. Burapha Task Force attacked these two buildings in Poipet:
– The International Call Centre building, which was originally a gathering place for individuals crossing the border before being sent to work as scammers in the area. Cambodia had transformed this building, approximately 2km away from Aranyaprathet, into a military operational base;
– A building opposite Wat Wang Mon, Tha Kham subdistrict, Aranyaprathet district, which was originally used by scammers to keep money mule lists and had been converted into a weapons and ammunition storage facility. Snipers were also detected there.
In another development Thailand sent a letter to Malaysia refusing to move the General Border Committee meeting to Kuala Lumpur as requested by Cambodia this morning.
Thailand insisted that the meeting be held at Ban Laem district, Chanthaburi province, to find a bilateral solution to the fighting along the border and not in a third country.
Meanwhile Cambodians were in tears after Thai army engineers demolished a statue of a Hindu god they had installed at Chong An Ma border crossing in Ubon Ratchathani province after the Thai side reclaimed the area.
“Thai Army engineers are demolishing a Hindu god statue at the Chong An Ma border crossing, which Cambodian soldiers had erected on Thai territory. This operation was carried out immediately after the Thai army successfully reclaimed the area and established security, in order to destroy symbols that Cambodia used to illegally claim sovereignty over Thai territory,” the Army Military Force Facebook page said.
Among the comments Thai netizens made were “Hun Sen is sobbing,” “Thailand is a Buddhist country, not Hindu or ghosts,” “Go for it! Don’t let them have an excuse like Preah Vihear temple in the past,” “Amazing! Our brave Thai soldiers, destroy them completely,” and “We’ve been holding back for so long, now do it!”
Cambodian netizens, upon seeing the video of the destruction of this statue of a Hindu god, wept and posted videos condemning Thailand on social media in anger and outrage. One Khmer netizen said, “Please share this with your Cambodian brothers and sisters. The button is in the bottom right corner. May the destruction return to those Siamese bandits, those despicable creatures. The Hindu god statue has been completely destroyed. They are so wicked; we will remember this for generations to come. May their tears overflow into Cambodia. May they vanish. Remember this, you Siamese bandits. If I have any new stories, I will update you. As descendants of Cambodians, this is incredibly heartbreaking. Please follow me.”
