Pheu Thai candidate wins Chiang Rai by-election

THE PHEU THAI, whose de facto boss Thaksin Shinawatra is in jail, scored a victory in Chiang Rai Constituency 7 by-election  for MP today (Sep. 14) with the People’s candidate trailing behind, Thai Rath newspaper said.

Unofficial results three hours after polls closed at 5 p.m. with 270 polling stations counted, representing 94.74% of the total, show that Pheu Thai’s candidate Sanga Phrommueang had triumphed with 43,229 votes, compared to 18,252 votes secured by the People’s candidate Suthat Yala.

The provincial Election Commission office said they stopped displaying the results after 270 of 285 polling stations, or approximately 95%, had been counted with the agency’s head office still having to certify the outcome of the race.

Thaksin was ordered back to jail by the Supreme Court to serve a one-year sentence with his six-month-long fakeout at Police Hospital until his release on parole early last year not holding up.

He had been earlier sentenced in absentia to eight years in jail which had been eventually curtailed under a royal decree to only one year.
