Two Cambodian journalists jailed for treason

TWO Cambodian journalists working for an online media outlet have been jailed on charges of treason for taking and sharing a group photo with PMN-2 landmines included, Naewna newspaper said this morning (Sep. 9).

A post on the Army Military Force Facebook page said that yesterday Mr. Porn Sopheap and Mr. Pheap Pheara, attached to TSP 68 TV Online, were charged and imprisoned in Siem Reap at the orders of senior leader Hun Sen.

This followed the publication of a group photo taken at the ancient Prasat Ta Kwai temple that included  PMN-2 anti-personnel landmines in the frame.

They were charged with “supplying a foreign state with information prejudicial to national defence” under Article 445, a treason charge that carries between 7 to 15 years in prison, over posts they made on Facebook regarding the Thai-Cambodia border conflict, All Cambodia News said.

The two of them were arrested at different locations on July 31 after returning from a reporting trip to Oddear Meanchey, opposite Thailand’s Surin province.
