Protest in front of Parliament to press for scrapping MOUs 43 and 44

PROTESTERS have gathered in front of Parliament since morning (Aug. 21) to demand that lawmakers revoke two memoradums of understanding, MOU 43 and MOU44, signed earlier with Cambodia, Amarin TV said.

Mr. Phichit Chaiyamongkol, leader of the Network of Students and People for Reform of Thailand, said this rally is being held to underscore their determination that MoUs 43 and 44 be revoked with representatives from all political parties urged to receive their letter while a statement will be issued before they disperse at 5 p.m.

The demonstration also attracted supporters of United Front to Defend Thai Sovereignty and United Power of Land groups.

Regarding security measures, Pol. Maj. Gen. Theeradej Thamsuthee, deputy chief of Metropolitan Police Bureau, said two teams of riot police including female officers are in charge with the first team working from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the second team from thenceforth to midnight.

In addition, traffic police are on hand to facilitate traffic flow while plainclothes policemen are also monitoring the situation around Parliament.

This demonstration followed Bhumjaithai Secretary-General/MP Chaichanok Chidchob, who is de facto party boss Newin Chidchob’s son, having previously said that MoUs between Thailand and Cambodia should be cancelled as they are not beneficial for the country and negotiations are still possible without them.

Under MOU 43 which was signed on June 14, 2543 (2000) and abbreviated accordingly the two countries agreed to conduct a land boundary survey and demarcation that is clear and in accordance with international standards.

Meanwhile MoU 44 was signed the next year 2544 (2001) by former Thai prime minister/now de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra and his former Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen for a joint undersea natural resources development.
