Thai, Cambodian army commanders reach seven-point agreement

 

A MEETING between regional army commanders of Thailand and Cambodia at 10.30 a.m. today (July 29) led to a seven-point agreement being reached with both sides upholding a ceasefire reached in Malaysia yesterday, Thai Rath newspaper said.

At yesterday’s meeting, which was mediated by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet agreed to an “immediate and unconditional” ceasefire.

Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari, the army spokesperson said at 11.20 a.m. that Thai Second Army Region Commander Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang held talks with Cambodian Deputy Army Commander and Commander of the 4th Military Region.

Meanwhile in areas under the command of First Army Region, namely Chanthaburi and Trat, representatives of Burapha Task Force and the Border Defence Forces too had held talks with their Cambodian counterparts.

The seven points of the agreement reached during discussions at Chong Chom in Surin province are as follows:

– Uphold ceasefire;

– Stop shooting at civilians;

– Stop reinforcing forces; 

– No movement of troops;

– Facilitate the repatriation of the wounded and deceased;

– A team of four persons from each country be set up to resolve problems;

– Wait for the outcome of the General Border Committee meeting scheduled for August 4, hosted by Cambodia.
