A FIRE that raged through a warehouse in Phuket where marijuana was grown this morning (Sep. 15) caused at least 3 million baht damage but there were no casualties, Thai Rath newspaper said.
At 7.26 a.m. Pol. Lt. Thanphisit Muangchan, an investigator at Thalang police station, inspected the marijuana farm warehouse in Si Sunthon subdistrict just as the fire started spreading and quickly called the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, Si Sunthon and Cherngtalay municipalities to send firemen to put it out.
As the fire raged thick black smoke billowed across the area and installed within was an automatic electrical system for various functions such as temperature control and watering the indoor farm.
As one group of firefighters sprayed water to put out the fire another group spread out around this warehouse to release the smoke so that more water could be sprayed. It took them 30 minutes to bring it under control.
It is suspected that the blaze was started by an electrical short circuit as when firemen first entered the warehouse they saw that the electrical control panel was still burning.
Police said Mr. Issara (surname withheld), 29, had rented this warehouse to grow cannabis about a year ago and damage was at least 3 million baht.
