THE BIG fire that ripped through over a hundred shops at Chatuchak weekend market on Tuesday morning (June 11) killing more than 1,000 pets and exotic animals also left scores injured with one of them, a cat nicknamed “Chatuchak mother”, helping attract attention to their plight, Naewna newspaper said this morning.
The blaze ravaged around 1,300 sq m of this market, killing more than 1,000 animals, including dogs, cats, birds, snakes, spiders and Siamese fighting fish, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt told reporters
Some 118 shops were burnt down and an initial inspection suggested that the fire was caused by an electrical fault, Police Superintendent Phuwadon Ounpho said.
Facebook user Clouseau Puttiporn wrote about this cat’s progress, saying, “Update, Chatuchak mother was admitted to TH Animal Hospital last night. She is the same cat in the clip. The results of the ultrasound and X-ray showed that there are at least three live babies in her womb. The gestational age is about one month. The mother cat has not been eating on her own, she has to be fed.”
The vet taking care of her said the soles of her four paws are swollen and peeling, her rear right leg burnt, her lungs white due to smoke inhalation.
The Facebook user thanked Mr. Suchat Petchthai for rescuing her.
A young lad, named Mek, had tried to rescue this cat for four hours but failed to do so but when Suchart showed up he was able catch within seconds, as can be seen in the video clip.
Meanwhile Ms. Saengduen Chailert, founder of Save Elephant Foundation and Elephant Nature Park, wants to ensure that all the animals injured in this fire recover with “Chatuchak mother” under the vet’s care 24 hours.
